General Information
The Virginia Suzuki Institute offers a concentrated week of private lessons, group lessons, chamber music, fiddling, orchestra, concerts, and musical enjoyment, for students, parents and teachers already involved in Suzuki lessons, or those who want to learn more about Suzuki. The Suzuki institute will run concurrently with the Fry Street Quartet Chamber Music Workshop. The institute provides activities for students of all ages and playing abilities. Parents have the opportunity to share ideas and gain new skills for helping their children. Teachers may enhance their skills through workshop study and observation of outstanding teachers. It is very exciting week of musical enrichment for everyone. A parent or responsible adult must accompany students under 13 years of age. A parent or responsible adult may either accompany students age 13-18, or they must be under the care of the teen counselor, for an additional fee. Students must be capable and responsible for getting to classes and meals on their own if staying in the teen dorm.

Suzuki Institute
All students will have a master class, small group class, large group class or play-in and solo recital each day on their instrument. String students will be assigned either to orchestra or a pre-reading class of theory based upon their age and book level. In addition to the core classes, student may sign up for elective classes. All students will have the opportunity to play a solo, if they so desire, and should come with a prepared piece to play on one of the daily solo recitals.
Teacher Training Discounts
The Virginia Suzuki Institute offers opportunities for teachers to begin or continue their training in the Suzuki Method. We have various units of study which are all sanctioned by the Suzuki Association of the Americas. You may choose to be a participant or an auditor. The fees are the same. In order to be a participant and to register your units of study with the SAA, you must be a high school graduate and fulfill the audition requirements of the SAA. Teachers sending 5 or more students to the institute will receive a discount on teacher training. Just send a note with your students’ names and for every 5 students you send, $75 will be deducted from your teacher workshop course fees.


Location
The Virginia Suzuki Institute is held at Emory and Henry College. E & H is located in the small community of Emory, Virginia, one mile off Interstate 81 (exit 26) in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is near the historic town of Abingdon, VA, home of the renowned Barter Theater. The college is within view of Virginia’s two highest peaks, Mount Rogers and White Top Mountain. www.ehc.edu
